Greetings,
Here we are, near the end of our 16th school
year! Every year we take a moment to appreciate
the growth and progress that each and every child
has made this year and we hope that you can see it,
too! Good-bye to all of the kindergartners that are
graduating to 1st grade. :( Many of them have
been with us for 3 years and we will surely miss
them.
Have a fun, safe summer! Look for the first of our
2007-2008 newsletters coming in August.

| Last Day of School |
 |
|
The last day of MSCK's calendar/curriculum year will
be May 31. Some of our teachers offer great
additional learning experiences during the summer.
Mrs. Marsh runs a program in June and Mrs.
McClendon runs a summer program. As a reminder,
all tuition checks for June, July and August should be
made out to your child's teacher.
Barker Creek Montessori's last day of school
will be May 31th and the picnic will be on June 1.
The picnic will again be held at Island Lake County
Park. Plan to arrive anytime after 10:30 AM and
meet at the playground with the beach area (the
middle of the three
parking lots on Island Lake Rd.). Bring a lunch,
blanket, swimsuit, towel, sand toys, etc. The water
is quite cold, but there are several kids that just
can't resist getting wet! The teachers will be there
until about 2:00 PM.

Eight Principles of Montessori Education
7. Teacher Ways and Child Ways: Dr.
Montessori's
recommendations on how teachers should interact
with children anticipated later research on parenting
and teaching. When adults provide firm
environmental controls but set children free within
those limits and respond sensitively while
maintaining
high expectations, children show high levels of
maturity, achievement, and empathy. Traditional
schools have sometimes erred by being too
authoritarian, conveying a "do-it-becuase-we-said-so,"
attitude that is not associated with positive outcomes.
When progressive schools fail, it may sometimes be
because they trade the authoritarian teacher-centered
features of many traditional schools for the opposite:
permissive, overly child-centered ones. Dr.
Montessori prescribed a third style, one consistent
with what is called authoritative parenting and which is
known to be associated with the most optimal child
outcomes.
8. Order in Environment and Mind:
Montessori
classrooms are very organized, both physically (in
terms of layout) and conceptually (in terms of how the
use of materials progresses). This organization
sometimes turns people off. It seems finicky, even
obsessive-compulsive. Yet research in psychology
suggests that order is very helpful to learning, and that
Dr. Montessori was right on target in creating very
ordered environments in schools. Children do not
fare as well in less ordered environments.

education in previous newsletters. Movement and Cognition, Choice, Interest, Extrinsic Rewards are Avoided, Learning with and from Peers, and Learning in Context.
