| New Parent Night |
 |
|
Every fall we offer a Parent Night
for those new to Montessori. The schedule will be as
follows:
- Barker Creek - Tuesday, Oct. 10, 7:00 PM
- Steele Creek - Monday, Oct. 2, 5:30 PM
During this evening the teachers will give an
overview of the curriculum found in our classrooms.
It is helpful for parents to see the Montessori
equipment, so that you will understand what your
children are talking about! You will be able to ask
lots of questions. Our discussions will culminate with
ideas for you to take "Montessori" home with you so
that we will be working as a team. Please get a
sitter for your children. Our program lasts about an
hour and a half.
|
| Show & Tell |
 |
|
The first day of your child's school week is now 'show
and tell' day. On this day, children may bring an item
to show or tell about during circle time. Please do
not send "toys" such as Pokemon, Barbies, etc. It is
more valuable educationally to send an artifact of
nature or something that your child has made or
found.
|
| Tuition Late Fee |
 |
|
Because we are trying to be
good stewards of your tuition dollar, we charge a
$15.00 late fee for all checks that come in after the
15th of the month without prior arrangement. We're
sure that you agree that the time spent tracking
down late checks can be better used in your child's
classroom.

| School Portraits |
 |
|
As a reminder! Sparrow Portraits will be offering
portraits of your children. You will have a chance to
view the pictures BEFORE you buy. Then you will be
able to choose sheets of 1 8x10 or 2 5x7s or 4 4x5s,
etc. The cost is quite reasonable and the portraits
will be back in plenty of time for holiday gift giving.
If you wish, you may bring siblings to the portrait
time indicated below and have all of your children
photographed together as well as individually.
Pictures are digital and can be view via your
email. Portrait times are as follows:
- Barker Creek - October 11, AM - 9:30, PM -
12:30
- Steele Creek - October 12, AM - 9:30, PM -
12:30

| Sign Language |
 |
|
As you may have heard, we have started our weekly
sign language lessons (Tuesdays for Barker Creek and
Fridays for Steele Creek). At circle time on sign
language day we learn a few words and practice
them in songs or games. We encourage the children
to use the signs they know in the classroom and we
sign to them as well. Each month we will list the
words that your child has learned. We encourage
you to use the Sign Language Browser link below to
look up
these words so you can learn them along with your
child. Enjoy!
September Sign Language Words:
- Please
- Thank You
- Excuse Me
- Me/I
- Manners/Polite
- Nice
- Work
- Sit
- Listen
- Walk

Eight Principles of Montessori
Education
1. Movement and Cognition: The first
principle of Montessori education is
that movement and cognition are closely entwined.
This observation makes sense: our brains evolved in
a world in which we move and do, not a world in
which we sit at desks and consider abstractions. Dr.
Montessori noted that thinking seems to be
expressed by the hands before it can be put into
words, an idea with which Piaget apparently
concurred. In small children, Montessori said that
thinking
and moving are the same process. Based on this
insight she developed a method of education in which
a great deal of object manipulation occurs. In recent
years, there has been an explosion of fascinating
research that speaks to Dr. Montessori's ideas about
movement's importance to thought. The findings
imply that good educational environments should use
movement to enhance learning.
Check back next month to learn about the second
principle of Montessori education - choice.
Kid Quote of the Month
(While talking with Mrs. McClendon about the baby 'in
her tummy',) "If you love your baby so much, why did
you eat him?"
